DECEMBER 2003

4th - Channel4 finally get round to screen the half hour television program on Polly Harvey and her influence on fans. The program is not so much a biography but more of a look at what effect Polly has had on her fans. An interesting angle. I met the producers and I am a little dubious as to the content. We shall have to see... C4 Thurs 4th Dec 0.55am UK.

Sound Travels - C4 PJ Harvey documentary.
The 20-minute documentary was shown on C4 TV last night. Rather than focusing in on PJ Harvey's music, the program was more focused on Polly's history and the fans. Two guys drive around the UK 'following' Polly's career. Starting in Dorset the pair meet a local promoter (great clip of Automatic Dlamini with Polly shown), then onto London to talk about the Rough Trade shop secret show (error: they played inside the store NOT outside - I was there!), then backwards and forwards between Dorset and London for more 'historical' sightings. A few clips were shown (Sheela, Dress, A Place Called Home, This Is Love) as well as the Automatic Dlamini piece. The two guys then attend the premiere of Kyle's 'Stories From The Road' and talk to the man himself as well as hanging out on the beach where Polly allegedly wrote 'Stories...'
I felt the program was a little too focused on the two presenters and more could have been said (or shown) about Polly's music. No mention of 'To Bring You My Love' or 'Is This Desire?', two of Polly's greatest successes. Also they seemed to ridicule Polly's stance to keep her privacy, ludicrously standing outside a pub in Dorset that would not let them in and complaining that Polly likes to keep her life private (I expect they did not know that the pub is closely linked to Polly, her family and friends).
